Milwaukee-based Banshee Music, a sonic branding agency and next-generation music publisher, has partnered with Churchill Downs Inc., the parent company of the racetrack where the Kentucky Derby is held, to formulate the official soundtrack for the 2009 event.
"The Kentucky Derby represents one of the greatest traditions and most iconic events in all of sports," John Canaday, Banshee Music’s director of sports marketing said. "We are thrilled to partner with Churchill Downs Incorporated to deliver original and unforgettable music that will give fans, spectators, viewers and sponsors a new platform to experience the Derby and remember it on a year-round basis."
Banshee has composed 15 full songs in a multitude of musical styles for thoroughbred racing’s premier event, which will take place at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville on Saturday, May 2.
The selections include the official infield party anthem, "Down and Derby,"’ and the theme for the Derby’s companion event, Kentucky Oaks 135.
"If you’ve ever been to the Kentucky Derby, then you’ve heard ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ at least once, but let’s face it, it’s not exactly a song that you can ‘rock out’ to," said Nick Ferrera, the newly minted "chief party officer" for the Kentucky Derby 135. "You’ve got to have the right soundtrack to set the mood, and the folks at Churchill Downs helped me hook up Derby fans with an official party play list that includes new takes on our favorite Derby song, plus a bunch of brand new party tunes. So, even if you can’t make it to the Derby in person this year, you can still ‘Party Up At the Downs’ because we’re supplying you with all of the songs you need to throw an awesome and authentic Derby party anytime, anywhere!"
"Banshee has been instrumental in helping us develop music as another extension of the Kentucky Derby brand," said Dave Tompkins, Churchill Downs Inc.’s chief marketing officer. "We believe music is a fantastic way to connect with younger fans and expose them to the Derby brand through an entertainment option they regularly consume.”
The complete Kentucky Derby 135 play list will be available later in March at http://www.KentuckyDerbyParty.com.
