Marquette University High School plans to demolish three apartment buildings just east of its campus at 3401 W. Wisconsin Ave. to clear 1.14 acres for future expansion.
The high school currently has a 6.25-acre campus.
The school purchased the apartment buildings in 2008 and has maintained there apartment use since then. But now the school is seeking a zoning change for the site and plans to demolish the buildings.
Temporarily the property will be used for surface parking, relieve parking use by the school in the neighborhood, said Kriss Schulz, vice president of communications and planning.
The school will conduct a planning process to determine what will eventually be built on the site. Then the school will have to do fundraising to pay for the project.
“We haven’t made a decision yet on what to put there,” Schulz said. “Within five years we expect to have something built.”
The new facility built on the site will likely be for academic or athletic use, Schulz said. The new facility will include underground parking to replace the surface parking spots that will be created after the apartment buildings are demolished, she said.
The school’s campus is landlocked and demolishing the buildings is the only way to expand, Schulz said.
“We’ve been here for over 150 years,” she said. “The plan is to be here for another 150 years.”
