Lowe’s Companies Inc. announced that it is closing 20 underperforming stores in 15 states, including the company’s store at 6300 W. Brown Deer Road in Brown Deer.

The Brown Deer store was closed Sunday night. The Lowe’s stores in Wauwatosa and Franklin remain open.

Ten Lowe’s locations across the nation closed at the end of business Sunday. The remaining 10 locations will close within approximately one month, following an inventory sell-through.

In addition, after completing a review of its pipeline of proposed new stores, the company announced it has discontinued a number of planned new store projects. Lowe’s now expects to open 10 to 15 stores per year in North America from 2012 forward, compared with a prior assumption of approximately 30 stores per year. The company is on track to open approximately 25 stores in 2011, as planned.

This is the second Milwaukee-area Lowe’s store to close in the last three years. In 2009, Lowe’s closed its Midtown shopping center store at 5800 W. Hope Ave., Milwaukee.
