Luxx Light Technology (USA) Inc. plans to provide technical support to customers and establish a hub for new business in the U.S. from its offices at 4830 S. 10th St. The company currently has four employees in Milwaukee, office manager Shannon Kolpin said in an email.

“Bringing the success of Luxx to Milwaukee is the next step in growing the company’s global presence,” Andreas Weyer, Luxx managing director, said in a press release announcing the new office. “There is a gap in the market for customizable retail lighting solutions in the States – and that’s something we’re hoping to solve.”

Weyer began establishing the company’s U.S. presence about a year ago and the office officially opened at the beginning of December, Kolpin said.

Luxx provides lighting design and implementation for retail displays, commercial refrigeration and shelves. The company has manufacturing plants in China and Germany, but will also produce samples for local customers from the Milwaukee location.

Large orders will be processed through the Chinese manufacturing plant, which has about 60 employees, Kolprin said. Once the company establishes its presence in the U.S., Kolpin said the plan is to expand in Milwaukee to produce what the Chinese plant is capable of.

Kolpin said the company chose Milwaukee because it has good infrastructure, is located between the East and West coasts with easy access to the airport and Chicago, allows Luxx to be in close proximity to two existing customers in the area and costs were lower than in Atlanta and Illinois, the other locations the company considered.

She also said Weyer wanted to be in a location that experiences “real winters” since he was already used to them being from Germany.
