Stritch sets opening for new Leadership Center

The Cardinal Stritch University Leadership Center will kick off a variety of efforts aimed at increasing leadership in the community and the state with a grand opening celebration 3-6 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Fox Point university’s Center for Communication Studies/Fine Arts.
The Leadership Center will house the university’s current degree programs in leadership, which are offered at the master’s and doctorate levels. Additional programing will include undergraduate, certificate and non-degree programs in leadership; a research clearinghouse; leadership coaching; conferences, workshops and institutes on leadership; a speakers series featuring high-profile leaders; and ventures with other organizations to promote leadership.
The center will focus on serving people in business, education, politics and charitable organizations.
There is no cost to attend the grand opening, but those attending are asked to register by calling 414-410-4646 by Sept. 6. Speakers at the event will include Sister Mary Lea Schneider, Stritch president; Jeanette Mitchell, center planning director; and Daniel Bader, president of the Helen Bader Foundation.
The foundation recently awarded Stritch $1 million for development of the center, and previously awarded the university two grants totaling $215,000 to assist in its planning.

Stritch names Polasek Arts & Sciences dean
Sister Mary Ann Polasek, 0SF, Ph.D., has been appointed to a three-year term as interim dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at Cardinal Stritch University. She succeeds Dickson Smith, who held the position for five years prior to his retirement this summer.
Previously, Polasek served as an intermittent department chair and a member of the science faculty for 35 years. She has a Ph.D. in genetics, master’s degrees in both genetics and biology, and a bachelor’s degree in biology. She is a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, the congregation that sponsors Cardinal Stritch University.
Polasek said her goals as the new dean include building cohesiveness among the college’s many disciplines, serving and assisting faculty, continuing work on the college’s strategic plan, planning for a major accreditation site visit in 2004, and preparing for a self-study later this year. She also will continue to serve as a coordinator for a five-year Title III grant of $1.75 million awarded to Stritch in 2000 for the sciences.
This year, Stritch’s College of Arts and Sciences will launch a new master’s degree in history and bachelor’s degrees in both environmental science and sports management. A master’s degree in science education also is in development.
Stritch, with campuses in Fox Point, Madison and Edina, Minn, has a total enrollment of about 6,800.
