General Plastics Inc. has begun construction on a $3 million expansion that will nearly double the size of its Glendale production facility to 93,000 square feet. It also added $1 million in new equipment last year, and plans to hire 15 employees over the next 18 months.
“Several years ago we made quality and customer service the focal points of everything we do at General Plastics. As a result, we’ve experienced double-digit growth in sales during the last few years,” said president Robert Porsche. “Recently, a number of our largest customers came to us and asked if we could keep pace with the significant growth they were experiencing. Obviously we’re committed to our customers so we answered the bell and said, ‘Yes’.”
The expansion, which is expected to be operational by October, will add 42,000 square feet of space to its existing plant. The manufacturer of custom plastics products currently operates a 51,000-square-foot production facility and a nearby 12,000-square-foot warehouse.
General Plastics, which currently has 70 full-time employees, has also undergone two previous expansions. The first addition added 20,000 square feet in 1991, and the second added 20,000 square feet in 2000.
Earlier this year, General Plastics was named the Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year for 2014 based on its commitment to quality, employee empowerment and environmental stewardship. The custom manufacturer of thermoformed products was recognized as the state’s top manufacturer in the “small” business category, which is comprised of companies with 100 or fewer employees.
General Plastics produces a variety of plastic products for the original equipment manufacturer and point of purchase markets, and serves such industries as transportation, health care, construction, automotive and retail.
