Fighting water leaks: Alderman Michael Murphy recently visited a home in the Story Hill Neighborhood as part of a demonstration by Milwaukee Water Works to spread awareness of wasteful water practices and leaks.

The alderman, shown with meter investigator Michael Mitchel, is checking the blue dial that spins as water is being used.

The test is done by turning off all faucets and water-using appliances and then checking the dial on the water meter. If the dial is still spinning there is a leak somewhere in the system.

The U.S. Environmental protection agency estimates that more than one trillion gallons of water are wasted in U.S. households each year because of easy-to-fix leaks.
