Clean soil fill from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Interstate 94 Mitchell Interchange project is being trucked to Oak Creek’s lakefront to cap off long-contaminated industrial brownfields.
The site to be remediated is located east of Fifth Avenue and north of Ryan Road.
Mayor Dick Bolender noted the significance of having up to 800,000 cubic yards of clean soil fill trucked to several city lakefront site over the next 12 to 15 months. The fill ultimately will allow for a coordinated reuse plan involving the property owners, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the City of Oak Creek to bring the properties back into productive use and to provide public access to the lakeshore, Bolender said.
The project was featured in a recent cover story of BizTimes Milwaukee magazine.
“Opening up our Oak Creek lakeshore to public use and other appropriate residential and business uses through a process involving significant public input has long been a dream of the community,” Bolender said. “The clean fill material now being brought to this site is helping to make that dream a reality. A coordinated effort on the part of the property owners, DNR, WisDOT, the City of Oak Creek and our consultants has brought about a triple win benefitting the State of Wisconsin taxpayers, helping meet DNR standards for appropriate clean up, and allowing the current property owners to help meet their environmental obligations.”
Oak Creek City Clerk Pam Bauer said, “The city has worked with the contractor who will be performing the haul work to minimize impacts to city residents as well to monitor and repair wear and tear to city streets.”
