Innovation: Sustainable multi-family apartment buildings

Milwaukee-based Dominion Properties has set out to become the leader in the production of sustainable multi-family apartment buildings.

The company’s Sage on Jackson building was completed in October of 2014 and is the first building of its kind, and the most sustainable apartment building to exist in both Wisconsin and Illinois.

The property has geothermal wells for heating and cooling, efficient heat pumps, thermal insulation, a green roof and cistern, a photovoltaic system to generate power and offset the building’s total energy consumption levels, and an efficiency boiler that heats the building’s water, acts as a backup heat source and provides heat to the parking area.

The building provides Milwaukee residents with a healthy living environment free of materials that produce harmful volatile organic compounds and off-gassing chemicals.

“People do not realize the detriment that things like carpet, paint, wood stains on cabinetry and certain plastics can have on a person’s health,” said Michael O’Connor, principal of the company.

Dominion Properties is focused on using cutting edge technologies, building methods and materials to set a standard in multi-family green living.

The building’s sustainability and efficiency make it extremely cost-effective to operate.

Sage on Jackson is located at 1509 N. Jackson St. in Milwaukee, and the company has started work on its second property, located at 1825 N. Prospect Ave.

Residents at the Sage properties can enjoy sustainable living that includes heat, air-conditioning, high-speed internet and modern floor plans at competitive rental rates.
