Developer plans Third Ward apartments

Developer Robert Joseph plans to build an 87-unit apartment complex called Jackson Square on a parking lot at the northwest corner of East Menomonee and North Jackson Street in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.

The five-story building will be constructed just south of 525 Chicago, a building that was converted by Joseph into 22 residential condominiums, and across Jackson Street from the Italian Community Center.

Some of the new apartments will have views of Lake Michigan, Joseph said. In addition to the apartments, Jackson Square will also have about 12,000 to 15,000 square feet of retail space and indoor parking, Joseph said.

Joseph still needs to gain city approval for the project, but he hopes to begin construction this fall and complete the project 18 months later.

"The apartment market is very strong," Joseph said. "I really believe in this neighborhood. I like the excitement of the Third Ward."

Joseph, the son of Milwaukee real estate developer Leon Joseph and grandson of developer George Bockl, is doing other projects in the Third Ward. He currently is redeveloping the 30,000-square-foot building at 117 N. Jefferson St. into office space and is adding a floor and renovating the building at 301 N. Broadway, converting it into an office building. Both buildings are more than 100 years old.
