Later this fall, Glorioso Brothers Fine Foods, an iconic Italian grocery and deli that has operated at 1018 E. Brady St. on Milwaukee’s east side for 64 years, will move into a much larger space just across the street in the former Brady Street Pharmacy at 1011 E. Brady St. While the store is moving, the Glorioso family is working hard to keep the company’s Old World charm and atmosphere, says Michael Glorioso, co-manager and a second-generation employee.

“On Valentine’s Day in 1946, three brothers, Joe, Eddie and Teddy Glorioso, opened Glorioso Brothers Fine Foods on East Brady Street, and 64 years later, not a whole lot has changed. Our new store will be directly across the street, which will alleviate a little of the culture shock that comes with any move. My dad and Uncle Joe are keeping a close watch on the transition to make sure the family business culture and ambiance remain the same.

“Because we have such a connection to our customers and our Italian heritage, we are doing everything we can to maintain the Old World charm. Our customers will still be greeted by a smiling family member when they walk in. The same wonderful smells will fill the air. Our shelves will still be stacked high with merchandise, and the aisles will be just big enough for two shopping carts to pass.

“Family portraits will fill the new store, along with our original sausage-making machine, produce scales, cash registers and wicker produce baskets that my grandfather Felice brought from Sicily as a young boy.

“Glorioso’s will still be more than a great Italian grocery store – it’s always been a place to meet family, friends and feel like you’re Italian, even if it’s just for a few hours. When we open the doors in November, we won’t be exactly the same, but we will be better! Grazie!”
