Construction begins on downtown Hilton Garden Inn project

Construction work began Monday on the conversation of the 125-year-old Loyalty Building at 611 N. Broadway in downtown Milwaukee into a 128-room Hilton Garden Inn hotel.

The general contractor for the project is Madison-based Stevens Construction Corp. The developer for the project is Rosemont, Ill.-based First Hospitality Group Inc., which acquired the six-story, 92,000-square-foot building earlier this year.

First MKD LLC, an affiliate of First Hospitality Group, was sued by Sir Mortgage & Finance of Arizona Inc., seeking foreclosure as the developer negotiated deals to get tenants to move out of the building. The lawsuit was dropped Monday. The last tenant in the building, the David Paris dental practice, plans to move to the Mackie Building at 225 E. Michigan St., which was also acquired by First Hospitality Group.

The Hilton Garden Inn is one of three downtown hotel projects that are now under construction. The others are a 200-room Marriott hotel southwest of Wisconsin Avenue and Milwaukee Street and a 90-room boutique hotel at the former Pabst brewery complex.
