Opus Development Corp. announced today that it will break ground this month on a 47,000-square-foot addition to the Shoppes at Fox River development along Sunset Drive on the southwest side of Waukesha.

Cudahy-based Roadrunner Transportation Systems Inc. has acquired all of the outstanding capital stock of D&E Transport, an asset-light flatbed carrier focused primarily on food and agricultural products located in Clearwater, Minn., for approximately $11.2 million plus an earnout.

Milwaukee-based A.O. Smith Corp. today reported first quarter net earnings of $47.5 million, or $1.02 per share, up from $24.2 million, or 52 cents per share, for the same period a year ago.

During a recent visit and tour of Racine, Wisconsin, and vicinity, I was reminded of the difficult challenges that face older manufacturing-oriented cities. It would be tough to find a place as steeped in manufacturing as the Racine area. As recently as 1969, over 40 percent of the Racine metropolitan area's jobs were to found in the sector — double the national level. Since then, the Racine area's experience has been similar to that of so many manufacturing-oriented places. Due primarily to job losses in the sector, manufacturing now represents only 20 percent of the Racine area work force, and this is still more than double today's national average!
