Medical College of Wisconsin
The Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, received a three-year, $230,000 grant to study the brain mechanisms of selective hearing. The study is funded by the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Bethesda, Md. Merav Sabri, a postdoctoral fellow in neurology research at the Medical College, is the principal investigator. The study will utilize simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography to provide some of the first neuroimaging studies of the healthy adult brain mechanisms involved in selectively attending to sounds. Findings may also help identify and define the processing deficits that underlie auditory attention in schizophrenia and dyslexia, which may lead to development of improved diagnostic procedures as well as new treatments.
The Medical College of Wisconsin was listed as one of 11 U.S. medical centers designated major hubs in a new national network for emergency stroke, seizure, spinal cord and brain injury research. The Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials network (NETT) was developed by the University of Michigan Health System Department of Emergency Medicine, Ann Arbor, Mich. NETT aims to provide the structure and resources to conduct a broad variety of research studies in ambulances and hospitals nationwide. The network is funded by a five-year, $7.7 million grant from the National Institute for Neurological Diseases and Stroke, Bethesda, Md. The 10 other hubs include: Wayne State University and Henry Ford Health System, Detroit; Emory University, Atlanta; Temple University, Philadelphia; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz.; University of California, San Francisco; University of Cincinnati; University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ken. and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. NETT plans to begin its first study in late 2007. The studies will involve a wide spectrum of medical disciplines, collaborating together to discover improved methods of treatment for patients with neurological emergencies.
Marquette University
Marquette University, Milwaukee, recognized Richard Smith, president of R.A. Smith and Associates Inc., Brookfield, with the Professional Achievement Award from the College of Engineering. Smith is a 1973 graduate of Marquette’s College of Engineering and earned a graduate degree from Marquette in 1982. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the College in 2006. Smith serves on the civil engineering advisory board and the Bell Chair advisors for the Associates in Commercial Real Estate (ACRE) program at Marquette.
Genco Industries Inc.
Steve Dombrock of Steve Dombrock & Co. S.C., Waukesha, purchased Genco Industries Inc., Waukesha, at the end of 2006. Steve Dombrock will continue to own and perform his duties as an accountant at Dombrock & Co. Paul Lusic joined Genco as vice president and general manager and Jim Ellsworth joined the management team as sales and marketing manager. Prior to joining Genco, Lusic served as national sales manager for Pepin Manufacturing Inc., Lake City, Minn. Ellsworth has more than 30 years of sales and manufacturing experience. He previously worked for Ryerson Inc., Chicago and Ralph Marlin & Co., Waukesha.
Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association
The Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association (EDWBA), Milwaukee, recognized local attorneys who serve the U.S. Courts for the Eastern District of Wisconsin as part of its annual meeting. William Mulligan, a partner at the law firm of Davis & Kuelthau S.C., Milwaukee, received the Judge Myron L. Gordon Lifetime Achievement Award for more than four decades of work as a corporate in-house counsel, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District and outside counsel for corporations. James Santelle, justice attache to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, received the Judge Robert W. Warren Public Service Award for more than 20 years of commitment to the law. Santelle has served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, Interim U.S. Attorney, principal deputy director of the executive office of the U.S. Attorneys and resident legal advisor to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Andrew Herbach, of Howard, Solochek & Weber S.C., Milwaukee, and Marie Nienhuis, of Godfrey & Kahn S.C. received the Judge Dale E. Ihlenfeldt Bankruptcy Award for their volunteer work at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court’s Pro Se Help Desk. The Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinic received the Judge John W. Reynolds Community Building Award for its service to more than 3,000 clients over the past five years. The clinic is staffed by 50 volunteer lawyers assisted by Marquette University Law students.
Peltz Center for Jewish Life
The Peltz Center for Jewish Life, Mequon, recognized Mayor Christine Nuernberg of the City of Mequon with the Community Leadership Award and Fred Stier, chief executive officer of Stier Construction Inc., Waukesha with the Community Pillar Award as part of the Peltz Center annual dinner. Nuernberg has been an elected official for more than 30 years. Stier received the Community Pillar Award for his work in the development of buildings in the greater Milwaukee area and for his service on civic boards, including La Casa de Esperanza Foundation, Waukesha; Brookfield Academy, Brookfield and the Waukesha County Chamber of Commerce, Waukesha.
Urban Trends Salonspa
JoAnne Peterman, owner of Alta Salon and Spa, will relocate the spa and rename it Urban Trends Salonspa. Urban Trends Salonspa will be located at 10351 Washington Ave., Suite F in Sturtevant and will open in June. Alta Salon and Spa is currently located at 3333 Douglas Ave., in Racine. The new location will offer more space for Peterman’s clients and the opportunity to hire more employees. Peterman will change the name of the salon to promote an upscale salon environment that will cater to relaxation and expertise. Peterman has 20 years of experience in the salon industry and has owned Alta Salon and Spa for five years.
Cornerstone Security Group LLC
Cornerstone Security Group LLC, Wauwatosa, received the Community Services Program Award from Security Sales & Integration magazine, Torrance, Calif., as part of the annual Sales and Marketing awards (SAMMY). Cornerstone Security Group received the award for its work with Habitat for Humanity International, Americus, Ga. Nominees for the Community Services award were judged on volunteerism and the degree of caring and responsibility for others that connects citizens and solves community problems. Cornerstone Security was the only Wisconsin company to receive an award in this international competition.
United Community Center
The United Community Center (UCC), Milwaukee, recognized local individuals with its annual Friend of the Hispanic Community awards program. The awards recognize the commitment non-Latinos have made to the local Hispanic community. Awards were given in the categories of business, education, philanthropy, athletics and partnership to: Roy Bubeck, president and chief executive officer of Badger Mutual Insurance Co., Milwaukee; Allan Klotsche and Robert Falson of the Brady Corporation Foundation, Milwaukee; John and Linda Mellowes of Charter Manufacturing Company Foundation, Mequon; Lynn Sprangers of the Milwaukee Brewers Charities, Milwaukee, and Dr. Gerald Weismann and Dr. Uriel Cohen of the UW-Milwaukee School of Architecture, Milwaukee. Sister Alice Trebatoski received a special honor from the UCC board of directors for more than 10 years of service in helping to drive fundraising success, including almost $20 million in capital gifts, which expanded the campus from a single building to nearly 12 square blocks.
The UCC announced the recipients of the Badger Mutual Insurance Co., Milwaukee, Youth Wall of Fame Awards to recognize the accomplishments of local Hispanic youth. Award winners included: Fernando Espino, an eighth grade student at the Bruce Guadalupe Community School; Maria Teresa Pacheco, an eleventh grader at Bradley Technology High School; Pascual Rodriguez, an eighth grader at Bruce Guadalupe Community School; Jose Rosas, a freshman at Marquette University High School and Ivelis Torres, a junior at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts and volunteer at the UCC Community Learning Center. The award winners have all shown high academic achievement, a dedication to community service and have served as a positive influence in the activities at the UCC. Award winners will have their pictures placed in the Youth Wall of Fame and Badger Mutual will donate $3,500 in scholarship funds to be distributed among the students to help them further pursue their educational goals.
Business Marketing Association-Milwaukee
The Business Marketing Association-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Bethany Treichel, a junior at Marquette University, Milwaukee. The BMA/Milwaukee Scholarship is open to Wisconsin college students entering their sophomore, junior or senior years, and majoring in marketing, advertising, communications or an equivalent program with an emphasis on marketing and communications. Eligible students must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Treichel is majoring in public relations with a minor in Spanish language and literature. She plans to graduate in December, earning her degree in less than four years. Treichel serves as a copywriter for The Warrior, an independent campus newspaper and a member of Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) Campus Ministry, a group of Christian students that sponsor and host events and activities throughout the Milwaukee community. She has interned for Chamness Group, Milwaukee, since 2006.
Wauwatosa Education Association
The Wauwatosa Education Association at Wauwatosa West High School recognized Tom Warden, a financial advisor with the Milwaukee office of Morgan Stanley, New York, as a Friend of Education for his volunteer work at Longfellow Academy. Warden mentored a seventh and eighth grade class as it developed and operated after-school businesses. The students’ business, PopCity, has generated enough profits to pay for class field trips, in addition to charitable contributions to The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee.

Matt Zumbo of Wilson Zumbo Illustration, Milwaukee, received the Best of Show award as part of the Guru Awards program from the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), Oldsmar, Fla. Zumbo received Best of Show for “Cowbucks Poster,” designed for Hoards Dairyman magazine, Fort Atkinson. Cowbucks portrays the human qualities and details of a real-life Starbucks scene with cows. The poster is one of six in a series Zumbo illustrated for the magazine.
Geneva Capital Management Ltd.
Geneva Capital Management Ltd., Milwaukee, received the Mid-Cap U.S. Equity award in the Investment Advisor magazine, N.Y., annual ranking of investment advisors who serve separately managed accounts (SMAs). Geneva Capital Management has focused on SMA platforms for about 10 years. The 2007 SMA Awards acknowledged companies with consistently strong performance, customization and tax efficiency in SMA platforms. To be eligible for the award, SMA portfolios had to be offered through a broad range of retail programs, have assets under management of at least $250 million, rank average or above average in four out of five categories within the S&P SMA Evaluator, and have a lead manager in place for a minimum of three years.
Gilda’s Club Southeastern Wisconsin
Gilda’s Club Southeastern Wisconsin, Shorewood, received a $1,000 grant from the Best Buy Children’s Foundation, a philanthropic division of Best Buy Co. Inc., Richfield, Minn. The grant was made possible through Best Buy’s TagTeam Award program, which recognizes the volunteer and fundraising efforts of its employees. Sarah Jungwirth, an employee with the Geek Squad at the Best Buy store in Fox Point, previously served as an intern for Gilda’s Club Southeastern Wisconsin. Best Buy Children’s Foundation aims to enhance the quality of life for school-age children in communities where Best Buy has a presence.

Hogan Financial Management LLC, Milwaukee was named on America’s Top Wealth Managers list by Bloomberg’s Wealth Manager magazine for the second year in a row and was named in the 150 Best Financial Advisors for Doctors by Medical Economics magazine for the sixth year in a row. Other Wisconsin companies on the Medical Economics list included Todd Bramson of Marathon Advisors, Madison; William Casey of Access Investment Advisors, Manitowoc and James Putnam of Wealth Management, Appleton.
R.A. Smith & Associates Inc.
Chris Stamborski, project engineer for R.A. Smith & Associates Inc., Brookfield, received the Young Engineer of the Year award from the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers (WSPE), Oak Creek. Earlier this spring, Stamborski received the Young Engineer of the Year award from the Waukesha chapter of WSPE. Stamborski joined WSPE in 2000. He has served on the Chapter Board since 2003 and is currently the president of the Waukesha Chapter. In additional to his leadership responsibilities, he is involved in National Engineers Week, MATHCOUNTS, scholarship fundraising, and chapter networking activities geared towards making a positive impact for both existing and future engineers.

Susan K. Wehrley & Associates Inc., Pewaukee, will move its Lakeview Center from the second floor to the first floor in the Siepman Building, located at 161 W. Wisconsin Ave. The new location will offer Lakeview Center twice the space it had on the second floor. The Lakeview Center will also add service offerings to become a full-service development center where consultants can collaborate for individuals and businesses on topics including Web development, benefits packages, information technology (IT) consulting and market research.
