The Milwaukee Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry

The Milwaukee Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), Milwaukee, recognized three employees of member companies as Employees of the Year. Nancy Boinski, production coordinator for RCI – Remodeling Center Inc., Pewaukee; Paul Frederickson, field technician manager for Carl Krueger Construction Inc., Milwaukee and Bryan Ward, designer and salesperson for Renovators Ltd., Brookfield, received the awards. Boinski has been with Remodeling Center for six years, Frederickson has been with Carl Krueger Construction since 2000 and Ward joined Renovators in 2002.

Farmers Group Inc.

Cindy Vance of Ins/Fin Inc., Sussex, was the only insurance agent in the state of Wisconsin to quality for the Farmers Group Million Dollar Round Table. Farmers Group Inc., Los Angeles, recently awarded insurance agents across the country with the 2007 Million Dollar Round Table qualification. The Million Dollar Round Table (MRDT), Park Ridge, Ill., is awarded to agents achieving balanced life insurance and financial services volume sales volume requirements established by MDRT.

Milwaukee Athletic Club

Chef Josef Zimmermann, executive chef for the Milwaukee Athletic Club, Milwaukee, was selected to participate in the inaugural Taste of the Club Nation Culinary Gala at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla. Zimmermann is one of 10 chefs chosen for the event, in which each participant will produce one course for the Taste of the Club Nation Reception and Dinner Gala April 20. Zimmerman proposed two recipes, including: an appetizer consisting of rabbit roulade filled with sun dried apricot and shiitake mousse, white truffle scented risotto, basil oil and a port reduction and an entrée of wild boar rack encrusted with cranberry and bacon on French green lentil stew, candied red and yellow baby beets, topped by Schug’s Pinot Noir glaze infused with maple syrup. Zimmermann has been the Milwaukee Athletic Club’s executive chef since 2001. Previously he was executive chef at the Pfister Hotel. Before coming to Milwaukee, he owned and operated a restaurant in Germany for nine years.

Regional Workforce Alliance

The Department of Workforce Development awarded Workforce Development Inc., Pewaukee, a $125,000 grant that will help meet the need for welders and metal fabricators in metropolitan Milwaukee and throughout the seven-county region of southeastern Wisconsin. The grant was awarded to the Regional Workforce Alliance (RWA), which includes Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine, Ozaukee, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha counties. The Regional Workforce Alliance will oversee the Southeastern Wisconsin Welding Consortium for Career Pathways in welding and metal fabrications occupations. RWA will partner with the Waukesha-Ozaukee-Washington Workforce Development Board, Southeast Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, Milwaukee PIC, and four technical colleges including: Gateway, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Moraine Park Technical College and Waukesha Area Technical College. The Welding Consortium will develop strategies to educate, train, place and retain individuals who have an interest in becoming a welder or metal fabricator.

Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District No. 21

The Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) No. 21 recognized local individuals and companies with the Downtown Annual Achievement Awards. Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin received the Brick and Mortar Award for revitalizing and attracting new visitors to downtown. Capital Grille, Milwaukee, received the Dining and Entertainment Award for bringing national prestige to Milwaukee’s downtown. Dermond Property Investments, Milwaukee, received the CPR Award for increasing jobs and enhancing the overall downtown neighborhood for its work on 757 N. Water St. River Rhythms received the Showcase Award for the Wednesday night concert series that has become a popular downtown music festival. Riverside
Theater received the Attraction Award for its innovative programming and marketing. Marc and Mata Bianchini of On the Marc Restaurants received the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award for their commitment to downtown as owners of restaurants including Cubanitas and Osteria del Mondo. Marc also served as a consultant on the opening of Carnevor and Kil@wat and is aiding in the redesign of the Milwaukee Chophouse menu. Marcus Corp. received the Corporate Citizen Award for its ownership of properties including The Pfister Hotel, Hilton Milwaukee City Center and InterContinental Milwaukee and its gifts of more than more than $1.25 million to the city of Milwaukee. They also have raised more than $55,000 for the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) and more than $150,000 for United Way. Tom Bernacchi, deputy director of Towne Investments, Milwaukee and chair of Milwaukee Downtown BID No. 21 and Beth Nicols, executive director of Milwaukee Downtown, BID No. 21 received the Champion Award for their dedication to the BID and downtown over the past 10 years.

Medical College of Wisconsin

The Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, board of trustees awarded $7,037,486 in support of 29 community and academic partnership projects statewide through the College’s Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (HWPP). A total of 73 community-based organizations in Wisconsin will participate in the 29 projects. They will partner with Medical College of Wisconsin faculty to implement these projects. Of the 29 projects, 14 are “impact” projects and 15 are “development” projects. Impact projects, focused on health promotion and disease prevention, received a total of $6,294,805 to implement major health initiatives. The development projects received a total of $742,681 to develop or plan health initiatives or partnerships. The awarded projects address major health problems in Wisconsin including: access to health care, high risk sexual behavior, injury prevention, mental health, nutrition, obesity and physical fitness, oral health, substance abuse, emergency preparedness and public health workforce development.
The National Eye Institute, Bethesda, Md., awarded the Medical College of Wisconsin a five-year, $1.6 million renewal grant for a study of wound healing in the cornea. The study, initially funded in August 1999, may provide help for patients who have had elective photorefractive surgery and don’t heal properly. Sally Twining, professor of biochemistry and ophthalmology, is principal investigator for the study.
The National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md., awarded a five-year $1.4 million renewal grant to the Medical College to fund continued development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent methods to study angiogenesis, the rapid new growth of blood vessels in brain tumors. Kathleen Schmainda, associate professor of radiology is the ongoing principal investigator. This is the second successful renewal of the grant that was first awarded in 2003.

MACC Fund

Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer Inc. (MACC Fund), Milwaukee, awarded a $1 million, three-year gift to the Cancer Center of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, to help develop a tumor vaccine. The gift will allow the college’s MACC Fund-supported investigators to expand preclinical programs on tumor vaccine development and apply their findings to childhood cancers. The cell-based tumor vaccine project is led by Bryon Johnson and Rimas Orentas, associate professors in pediatrics for hematology and oncology and Dr. William Drobyski and Carolyn Taylor, professors in medicine for neoplastic diseases, working with a team of clinical and laboratory investigators based in the Cancer Center, Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa.

Quality Customs Broker Inc., St. Francis, and RAM Tool Inc., Grafton, have selected Integrity Retirement Plan Services LLC, Waukesha, as the third party administrator for their retirement plans.

Barney’s Brother Salon/Spa

Barney’s Brother Salon/Spa, Milwaukee, was named one of the 200 fastest-growing salons in North America by Salon Today magazine. The magazine profiled the 200 salons in its January 2007 issue. The 200 salons were selected from applicants submitted by Salon Today readers.

Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce

The Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2007 Business of the Year and the Citizen of the Year awards. The awards recognize businesses and citizens who make significant contributions to Mequon and Thiensville and will be presented at the chamber’s annual Celebrate Your Community awards dinner on Sept. 19. Nomination forms are available at Mequon and Thiensville area businesses and at the chamber’s Web site, www.mtchamber.org. All nominations must be submitted by June 1.

Wellness Council of Wisconsin

The Wellness Councils of America, with its local affiliate, the Wellness Council of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, presented the Gold Well Workplace Award to Enzymatic Therapy Inc., Green Bay, Medical Associates Health Centers, Menomonee Falls, and Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. The Gold Well Workplace Award is awarded semiannually and recognizes an organization for its commitment to the health and well-being of its employees.
