Notable Sages Over 65: William Nimke

Class of 2024

William Nimke, 69, is the founder and executive director of Milwaukee-based All Hands Boatworks Inc. The nonprofit youth development organization was established in 2013 and offers hands-on learning for youth and the public, teaching the craft and art of wooden boat building. It also organizes activities on the water.

“What started out of the trunk of Bill’s car has grown to become a highly regarded youth organization with an 8,600-square-foot shop and integrated programs for youth from 10-22 years old,” said Trent Myers, volunteer instructor and boat builder. “Bill and All Hands Boatworks have led collaborative projects with more than 50 Milwaukee schools and other youth-serving organizations.”

Its motto, “building more than a boat,” reflects All Hands’ mission of serving Milwaukee youth through summer camps, in-school projects, boat shop internships, after-school programs and community workshops. The programs are designed to build self-confidence, teamwork and responsibility as well as reinforce STEM learning.

Nimke and All Hands have worked with students to build more than 145 skiffs, dories, sailboats, rowing gigs and canoes.
