Santiago’s departure will leave void at UWM

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Carlos Santiago received bipartisan praise this week as he prepared to leave his position in October to take over as chief executive officer of the Hispanic College Fund.
Tributes came from Gov. Jim Doyle, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker.
“I have worked closely with Carlos to make sure we are moving forward to bring Milwaukee a new engineering campus, School of Public Health, School of Freshwater Sciences, as well as to make Wisconsin the center of water technology and research by expanding the Great Lakes Water Institute,” Doyle said.
“Chancellor Santiago had the vision to bring together partners in economic development and he deserves credit for setting the stage for job creation,” Barrett said.
“I’m sorry to see him go. We worked closely on the new School of Engineering on the county grounds and have grown to value his leadership,” Walker said.
Santiago has led the state’s second-largest campus since 2004. UW officials hope to name a replacement by next summer.
