Plans for I-39/90 won’t impact Zoo Interchange

The state’s decision to speed up the expansion of Interstates 39/90 in southern Wisconsin will have no impact on rebuilding the Zoo Interchange, a transportation official says.
The state announced this week it has completed its economic assessment report on expanding the roadway to six lanes and has proposed compressing the construction schedule to four years instead of six, as originally planned.
The news came as Republicans push the state to move up reconstruction of the Zoo Interchange in southeastern Wisconsin.
However, DOT executive assistant Chris Klein said the I-39/90 project will have no impact on the Zoo Interchange because the projects are funded from different pots of money. All southeastern Wisconsin road projects have a special appropriation, while outstate projects are funded through the major highway program.
Klein also said compressing the time frame for the I-39/90 project will save the state some money, though the project price tag is projected to be just more than $1 billion.
