MPS could receive $70 million from ‘Race to Top’

Milwaukee Public Schools would receive $70 million in additional federal aid if the state is successful in its second application for “Race to the Top” federal education funding.
However, Gov. Jim Doyle said odds are long that the state will be successful after missing out during the first round of applications.
Still, he said the application submitted to the feds includes stronger reforms and more buy-in from school districts and unions than the state’s failed first-round application.
Under the new application, districts would receive a minimum of $70,000, or $100 per pupil, whichever is greater. The largest six districts – Kenosha, Racine, Green Bay, Beloit, Madison and Milwaukee – would receive additional resources. For Milwaukee, that would mean $70 million.
