Local nonprofit changes names, expands services

The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in West Allis, has officially changed its name to the Center for Communication, Hearing & Deafness. The Center has also launched an updated website to coincide with the organization’s name change.
“The primary reason for the name change is to broaden the agency’s mission so it can better respond to the changing needs and requirements in our community,” said Dorothy Kerr, executive director. “This will enable the center to continue to thrive and remain a leader in helping children and adults overcome the challenges posed by hearing loss as well as other language or communication disorders.”
According to Kerr, the name change will also allow the center to build in its commitment to ensure equal access to language, communication and education for all members of the community through its expanded services.
The center provides sign language interpreting; assistive technology consultations and sales, speech-language therapy, audiology services and educational programs open to the community. It is accredited by the National Association of Speech and Hearing Centers, and each year helps more than 6,000 people through direct services and community outreach programs.
