Milwaukee legislator bans weapons in his Capitol office

Wisconsin’s new concealed carry law may take effect this week throughout the state, but State Representative Leon Young (D-Milwaukee) is prohibiting the practice in his legislative office at the State Capitol.
Young, a former Milwaukee Police Officer, has some “major” reservations both about the need as well as application of the new concealed carry measure.
“Increasing the number of handguns in our midst does little, if anything, in terms of ensuring public safety and might even have the opposite impact,” Young declared.
According to Young, “the application of the concealed carry law presents a myriad of logistical challenges and is a real confusing proposition for the public. Just look at the situation at the Capitol. The Senate wants to prohibit concealed carry in its gallery, but visitors to the Assembly (gallery) would be permitted to carry their weapons.  This is a real mess.”
The State of Wisconsin Department of Justice estimates that it will issue at least 100,000 permits in the first year, approximately 50,000 in the second year and may issue more than 200,000 over the five-year period.
“This proliferation of more handguns on our streets is bad public policy, but  I want my constituents to rest assure in knowing that my Madison office will be a handgun-free zone and all are welcome,” Young said.
