Workshops to provide insights for sales and marketing
Sales Progress LLC and Biztimes Media LLC today announced SalesFest, a full-day of training workshops demonstrating the latest tools and strategies in selling, social media and marketing.

New Milwaukee consortium to focus on lowering cost of health care
Executives from The Medical College of Wisconsin, University Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University announced today the formation of a new consortium for health care economics and innovation. The effort that will tackle, among other things, the rising costs of health care in Wisconsin.
John Raymond, president and chief executive officer of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Mike Lovell, chancellor at UWM and the Rev. Scott Pilarz, newly appointed president of Marquette University, made the announcement today to member of the Greater Milwaukee Committee.
“This is an exciting announcement,” Raymond said. “Five years from now, I hope we can say this is the most successful collaborative initiative I have been a part of. This is very important to the region. Cost of health care for company employees is making it difficult for our businesses to compete nationally and internationally.”
The consortium, which also will involve Froedtert Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, will seek to put together a ‘multi-disciplinary team’ to tackle the issues surrounding health care costs and quality for the region, Raymond said.
The consortium will include academics and professionals from all five institutions and will focus on health care economic viability, access, lifestyle issues, innovations in health care delivery, health care reform and improving the life of populations.
The consortium will be largely funded by existing resources available at the collaborating institutions, Raymond said.
“We have sufficient resources to get started, but we will also be asking for assistance from the community,” he said.  
The consortium will seek national grants and funding opportunities, but hopes to inspire by vision, Raymond said.
“We have many of the people we need to begin tackling these issues already in place,” Lovell said. “Between our institutions, we have many of the economists, the ergonomicists and the other expertise we need. They are already ready to begin on this project.”

U.S. EPA administrator to give keynote at Milwaukee Water Summit
Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency  and a member of President Obama’s cabinet, is scheduled to provide a keynote address for Water Summit V on Tuesday,  Sept. 20 at Discovery World.  Jackson will share her views on how the EPA, local government, small businesses and the water industry as a whole can work together to spur research and develop water innovations that will clean our waters and help drive our local economy.
As Administrator, Jackson has pledged to focus on core issues of protecting air and water quality, preventing exposure to toxic contamination in our communities, and reducing greenhouse gases. She has promised that all of EPA’s efforts will follow the best science, adhere to the rule of law, and be implemented with unparalleled transparency. Jackson is the first African-American to serve as EPA Administrator.
Jackson has been named one of Newsweek’s “Most Important People in 2010,” has been featured on Time Magazine’s 2010 and 2011 lists of the “100 Most Influential People in the World”, listed in Essence Magazine’s “40 Women Who Have Influenced the World,” and profiled in O Magazine for her work to protect our nation’s air, water and land from pollution that threatens human health.

Milwaukee Art Museum acquires masterpiece of American art
The Milwaukee Art Museum has acquired the portrait Alice Hooper, a major colonial American painting by John Singleton Copley. Copley is recognized as one of the great American artists of the day—and one of the first native-born painters to achieve success both at home and abroad.
“Alice Hooper displays the traits that made Copley desirable in colonial Boston. Copley’s rendering of her fashionable sacque gown dazzles the eye, with its profusion of glinting blue satin and frothy lace spilling from its underdress,” said William Rudolph, curator of American art and decorative arts at the Milwaukee Art Museum. “The artist lingered on the highlights of Alice’s ruby earrings and choker, revealing the great wealth of her family. Yet her pensive gaze and half-shadowed face allude to her graciousness; she looks modest, rather than proud.”
Alice Hooper, painted by Copley around 1763, depicts the seventeen-year-old daughter of the wealthiest man in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Robert “King” Hooper. Alice’s father commissioned this portrait to mark his daughter’s engagement to Jacob Fowle, Jr.
According to Rudolph, Alice Hooper’s composition is one of a series of women depicted in fantasy garden settings, which all descend from John Faber’s 1691 engraving after Sir Godfrey Kneller’s Duchess of Grafton.
The acquisition of Alice Hooper coincides with the Museum’s commitment to the expansion of its American art program, including a major reinstallation of its collections in honor of the 125th anniversary of the Museum in 2013.
The acquisition was made possible in part by a donation from the estate of Milwaukeeans Leonard and Bebe LeVine, along with the Virginia Booth Vogel Acquisition Fund, with funds in memory of Betty Croasdaile and John E. Julien, and gift by exchange of Chapellier Galleries, the Samuel O. Buckner Collection, and the Max E. Friedmann Bequest.
“The portrait of Alice Hooper will become one of the Museum’s icons of American art,” said Brady Roberts, chief curator for the Milwaukee Art Museum. “This is a significant acquisition for the Museum, and without the generosity of Leonard and Bebe LeVine and others, it would not be possible. With Alice Hooper, and with the reinstallation of the American Collections Galleries on the Museum’s lower level, we are reimagining the scope of American art at the Museum.”

Tempo Milwaukee seeks nominations for Mentor Award
Tempo Milwaukee is seeking nominations for its 22nd annual Tempo Mentor Awards. Award recipients will receive a $5,000 scholarship designated in their name to a woman at a four-year educational institution.
Eligible candidates include Milwaukee-area business and community leaders and professionals, Tempo members and corporations.
The awards luncheon, to be held Feb. 16, 2012, is is the organization’s signature event and is attended annually by more than 500 people from the Milwaukee Business Community.

Whitewater to host social media and entrepreneurs forum
National Social Media strategists will headline the University Wisconsin Whitewater’s Social Media for Business and Entrepreneurs forum on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The social media program will be held at the Whitewater University Technology Park Innovation Center from 1 to 4 p.m. and is designed to help small business owners, entrepreneurs and anyone else interested in using social media help grow their company or business or personal brand.
Sara Meaney, partner and vice president of Social Media and Public Relations at Milwaukee-based Hanson Dodge Creative, will be the keynote speaker at the Social Media for Business and Entrepreneurs forum, Meaney will share insights on why social media is more important now than ever in today’s competitive business climate driven by digital and mobile technology.
Other program highlights include a social media roundtable of regional experts who will present best-practices on how businesses and entrepreneur can enhance their brand, outreach and relationships with key stakeholders. Featured speakers include strategists from Edelman, Staples Marketing, American Standard Process and GMWrites.
Matt Scherer, an expert in online networking for businesses and individuals, will conclude the program with a presentation on how to use LinkedIn to enhance organizations’ reputations and online communities while building loyal stakeholder groups.
