Joe and Jody Nolan became focused on healthy eating several years ago. The two quickly saw a need for an organic food source in Waukesha County after being forced to drive to Milwaukee or even as far as Madison to purchase organic food.
The Nolans opened Good Harvest Market in 2005. The store offers 100 percent organic produce and serves almost entirely 100 percent organic meals in the in-store café.
In addition, Good Harvest Market also provides cooking classes, meditation sessions, musical performances and nutritional information presentations in the store’s community room to promote the well being of their customers, free of charge, Joe Nolan said.
The café and community room provide a space for social interaction within the store and the Nolans also encourage their employees to interact with customers by offering nutrition information and shopping guidance.
The Good Harvest Market carries many gluten free products for people with allergies, as well as locally grown produce to support local business.
Giving back to the community was a key factor in opening the store and contributing to businesses and organizations that promote the arts and education was essential as well, Jody Nolan said.
The Nolans recently made a large contribution to Nugenesis Farms, a local farm that teaches people about good eating and healthy habits, as well as to Delafield-based SummerStage’s “Raise the Roof” capital campaign. SummerStage regularly hosts concerts and theater performances in Lapham Peak State Park to encourage overall well-being within the community.
From educational classes, exercise and meditation sessions, employee guidance and overall sense of community belonging, the Good Harvest Market provides a place for not just healthy food but life improvement.
According to the Nolans, teaching customers how to eat healthier is just one step in achieving holistic well-being. The Nolans are big believers in education and the arts. The store offers classes to educate customers on ingredients to avoid like high fructose corn syrup, trans fats and hydrogenated oils, and also encourages wellness on a mental and spiritual level.
“Anytime we visit another city we check out the natural foods stores,” said Jody, “We saw a number of stores around the country, and saw how successful (our store) could be.”
