Wisconsin’s unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent in January, according to the Department of Workforce Development.

The DWD figure is based on preliminary numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In December, Wisconsin’s unemployment rate was 5.2 percent, flat from November.

The state added about 40,800 private sector jobs from January 2014 to January 2015.

“The numbers released today show that Wisconsin’s economy continues to add good-paying, middle-class jobs,” said Reggie Newson, DWD secretary. “It is evident that the investments we are making to develop the workforce and grow the state’s economy are creating opportunities and moving our state in the right direction.”
