With the costs to hire and train new personnel on the rise, it is more important than ever to hold on to key talent that keeps business moving forward, says Dan Cull, national sales manager at Muskego-based workplace recognition solution provider Royal Recognition Inc. To prevent employees from looking elsewhere, he advises promoting a culture of workforce appreciation.

“A typical company loses 20 to 50 percent of its employee base on average each year. While there is no cure-all for employee retention, there are certain tactics a company can use to retain and engage its employees beyond the challenge of their daily responsibilities.

“By introducing a variety of new workplace recognition programs such as peer-to-peer or on the spot recognition, in addition to a traditional service milestone reward, businesses can target every employee of the current four generation workforce. Veterans and baby boomers tend to lean more towards traditional forms of workplace acknowledgement–awards for years of service, private displays of thanks–whereas generations X and Y prefer social activities and public praise. Most importantly, leadership must know when, where and how to supply the gratitude or it will fall short of its intended goal: sincere thanks for a job well done.
