Wisconsin State Fair Park has officially opened grounds for the 2014 state fair, which runs today through Sunday, Aug. 10.
The 2014 fair, presented by U.S. Cellular, will follow tradition with a full menu of fried food, a lineup of live performances, a host of livestock competitions, and more than 50 rides and attractions.
Last year’s fair attracted more than one million visitors, the largest reported turnout in about 45 years, according to fair officials.
2014 fair festivities are gaining momentum today with Brew City Wrestling shows at noon and 2:30 p.m., performances by De’Anna “The Hypnochick” at 4:30 and 6 p.m., the Wisconsin Potato Growers Auxiliary Potato Eating Contest at 5 p.m., and a performance by Phil Vassar at 7:30 p.m.
Opening day admission costs $2 for individuals who bring two-non-perishable food items or make a cash donation in support of Hunger Task Force. The promotion runs until 4 p.m.
New fair features for 2014 include a kid-friendly exhibit titled “Animal Connections: Our Journey Together”; an “Aussie Kingdom” with daily shows involving kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburra birds and other animals native to Australia; a talent competition geared toward children and teenagers; and a K-9 sports arena with shows and demonstrations by dogs that dance, perform agility courses and more.
Wisconsin State Fair Park is located at 640 S. 84th Street in West Allis.
