Glendale-based Johnson Controls Inc. has expanded its manufacturing and research and development facility in Wuxi, China.
The $35 million project was completed to triple Johnson Controls’ manufacturing capability and meet demand for building energy efficiency in a growing market.
The Wuxi campus is now about 1.5 million square feet. The company hired an additional 60 employees, bringing the total employment to more than 1,800 at the facility.
The building utilized green building features, such as rainwater recycling and solar energy systems, achieving LEED Gold certification.
With the addition, Wuxi has become one of Johnson Controls’ largest research and development centers for building solutions. The campus covers heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and industrial refrigeration solutions, and will lead innovation on heat recovery solutions for district heating plants.
“Urbanization and the government’s efforts to promote sustainable development are driving demand in China for energy efficient buildings,” said Dave Myers, president, Johnson Controls Building Efficiency. “This is a real opportunity for us to expand our presence and use our expertise and innovation in a growing global market.”
Last year, Johnson Controls announced it will build a second global corporate headquarters in Shanghai. The campus, which will be about 377,000 square feet, is expected to be operational in late 2016.
