Midwest Custom Bottling’s ‘Tippy Cow’ off to strong start

Pewaukee-based Midwest Custom Bottling has released Tippy Cow, a new rum cream liqueur.

Tippy Cow was officially released in mid-February, and comes in four flavors – Vanilla Soft Serve, Orange Cream, Shamrock Mint and Chocolate.

Duane Maas, chief information officer at Midwest Custom Bottling, said the initial response has exceeded expectations.

“We decided to do initial production of 25,000 cases, and it sold out in about three weeks,” Maas said. “The reception has been amazing…We could have probably done 50,000 cases.”

Tippy Cow, sold in 750 ML bottles resembling classic milk bottles, is 14 percent alcohol by volume and features Caribbean rum and real Wisconsin dairy cream from Neenah-based Galloway Co. Tippy Cow is specifically marketed as being from Wisconsin.

“We’re proud that it’s all Wisconsin cream,” Maas said. “We’re really pushing this as a Wisconsin product.”

The six-year-old company currently has 30 full time employees, and employs up to 150 temporary workers based on demand. It currently has two bottling lines and is looking to add a miniature line over the next couple of months, Maas said.

Maas said he is optimistic about what’s next for Tippy Cow.

“We’re pleased with the reception,” he said. “It kind of caught us by surprise. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. All four (flavors) are liked by different people, so it really gives variety.”

Midwest Custom Bottling has grown considerably since 2009, when it first released its original product, RumChata. Sales of RumChata have grown from 2,000 cases in 2009 to 650,000 cases in 2012.
