Waukesa-based DUECO Inc. has partnered with Vanair Mfg. Inc., an Indiana-based manufacturer of truck-mounted air compressors and generators, to introduce the first plug-in hybrid underground utility vehicle. The vehicle includes technology developed by Odyne Corp.
The hybrid truck, which has enough power for plastic pipe fusing, can also power its own air compressor, exportable power and auxiliary climate control system.
“By powering the Vanair compressor through a large battery system we eliminate engine idle as well as the need for a tow-behind compressor at a job site,” said Joseph Dalum, executive vice president of DUECO.
The underground utility vehicle’s compressor has an automatic shut down device that starts and stops it based on demand, which increases battery life and decreases unnecessary operation. At the end of the work day, DUECO’s hybrid underground utility vehicle plugs into a charging station to recharge its batteries. They are also recharged through braking and launch assist, Dalum said.
DUECO’s line of hybrid vehicles for the utility market includes a medium-duty aerial lift, a heavy-duty tandem axle aerial lift and a digger derrick.
