Chicago developer to speak at BizTimes Commercial Real Estate Conference

One of downtown Chicago’s most prominent real estate developers has been added to the lineup of featured speakers at the BizTimes Commercial Real Estate & Development Conference.

Joel Carlins, one of downtown Chicago’s most prominent real estate developers, has been added to the lineup of featured speakers at the BizTimes Commercial Real Estate & Development Conference to be held on Friday, Nov. 14.

The theme of this year’s conference is "The Fresh Coast Advantage," and the speakers will discuss how Milwaukee’s proximity to Lake Michigan and other waterfront assets will be a strategic, competitive and economic advantage in the 21st century.

Carlins is the founder and co-chief executive officer of Magellan Development Group LLC.

Magellan is developing Chicago’s $4 billion, mixed-use Lakeshore East community, believed to be the largest parcel of downtown land under development in any major U.S. city. Rising in the heart of downtown Chicago near Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park and Navy Pier, Lakeshore East spans 28 acres. Lakeshore East is an urban lifestyle center that includes homes, retail, recreational opportunities and amenities such as a lush six-acre public park and an elementary school.

Lakeshore East is rising along the threshold of Chicago’s lakefront and the Chicago River. The project already has received several awards, including a National Honor Award for excellence in urban design from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its master plan, as well as the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence.

Magellan has developed properties throughout downtown Chicago.

Carlins oversees all of the company’s development activities, from acquisition of land through financing, site development, design and construction. He was inducted to the Chicago Real Estate Hall of Fame in August 2007.

At the Milwaukee conference, Carlins will discuss the strategic value of waterfront commercial real estate. He also will provide an outsider’s perspective about Milwaukee’s waterfront assets and under-utilized opportunities.

In addition to Carlins, the other speakers at the BizTimes Commercial Real Estate & Development Conference will be:

* Franz Hoffman, president of Procorp Enterprises LLC in Milwaukee and chair of the Milwaukee 7 Water Council. Procorp specializes in sustainable water and wastewater treatment solutions. Hoffman will speak about the Great Lakes water resource and the need to use sustainable real estate development practices and products.

* James Randel, commercial real estate attorney, broker investor and author. Randel is a leader in "added value" investing, an approach to real estate that attempts to boost the value of a property well beyond normal appreciation or inflation. His strategies have been followed by investors throughout the country. He is the author of "The Real Estate Game And How To Win It" and "Confessions of a Real Estate Entrepreneur." Randel is a distinguished commentator on real estate issues at conferences throughout the nation, including the Harvard Business School. A native of Ohio, Randel will speak about the future strategic advantages of developing real estate in the Great Lakes region.

The opening remarks of the conference will be provided by Richard "Rocky" Marcoux, commissioner of the Milwaukee Department of City Development. Jim Villa, the new president of the Commercial Association of Realtors Wisconsin (CARW), will provide some exclusive market data at the conference. The conference will be moderated by Mark Eppli, Ph.D., professor of finance and chair of the Robert B. Bell Real Estate Program at Marquette University.

Small Business Times presents the conference annually in partnership with Marquette’s Bell Real Estate Program and CARW.

A special supplement, the BizTimes Commercial Real Estate & Development Book, featuring exclusive editorial content and data, will be published in conjunction with the conference. For more information on sponsorship or advertising opportunities call 414-336-7112 today!
