Capital budget contains some Milwaukee goodies

Gov. Scott Walker’s $1.2 billion capital budget proposal includes some major investments in the Marquette Dental School and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
But the Bradley Center will have to find funds elsewhere.
The State Building Commission approved $8 million in grants and another $8 million in general fund supported borrowing to construct a 40,000-square foot addition to the Marquette Dental School. The grant is matched by $15 million from the university.
Also approved was $12.25 million in program revenue supported borrowing to purchase the former Pabst Brewery site at 1240 North 10th Street for the School of Public Health Building. The renovated building is currently being leased by the school.
The Bradley Center was seeking $10 million in general fund supported borrowing for maintenance and renovation. A review by Bradley Center Sports and Entertainment Corporation estimated the backlog of maintenance to be $23 million. Walker did not include the request in his capital budget.
The Bradley Center is the home of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, owned by Dem U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl.
The budget must also be approved by the Joint Finance Committee and the Legislature.
