UWM names finalists in chancellor race

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee recently announced the names of five candidates still in the running for its chancellor position. The five candidates will participate in a series of forums with faculty, staff, students and community members from March 16 to March 31.

Kevin Reilly, president of the UW System and the appointed Special Regent Committee, which includes regent Danae Davis, regent Judith Crain of Green Bay, regent Tony Evers of Madison, regent Michael Spector of Milwaukee and regent José Vásquez of Milwaukee will interview the finalists on April 12. Following their interview they will recoomend one candidate to the full Board of Regents which must approve the appointment.

The finalist selected will succeed UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago who stepped down from his position last October to accept a position as chief executive officer of the Hispanic College Fund. Michael Lovell, a finalist for the position and dean of UWM’s College of Engineering and Applied Science is serving as interim chancellor.

The forums are designed to give others an opportunity to interact directly with the finalists and will include a presenatation by the finalist followed by a question and answer session. Each forum will begin at 1:30 p.m. on the day of each candidate’s visit.

The finalists for the UWM chancellor position and the day they will appear on campus follows.

  • Wednesday, March 16: James Muyskens, president of Queens College, City University of New York
  • Friday, March 18: David Belcher, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at University of Arkansas at Little Rock
  • Monday, March 28: Gary Miller, provost and vice president for academic affairs and research at Wichita State University
  • Wednesday, March 30 Michael Lovell, interim chancellor at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee
  • Thursday, March 31 Lisa Rossbacher, president of Southern Polytechnic State University
