The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) has added the extension of the Lake Parkway to the Year 2035 Regional Transportation Plan.
The commissioners unanimously voted Wednesday to approve the six-mile extension.
The amended Regional Plan now anticipates growth and future needs for the Lake Parkway (State Highway 794) by extending it from its current end point at Edgerton Avenue in Cudahy to State Highway 100 in Oak Creek.
Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik welcomed the commission’s decision.
“An extended Lake Parkway will provide the necessary transportation infrastructure to promote economic development in Milwaukee County’s South Shore and around the Port of Milwaukee and General Mitchell International Airport. We are part of the increasingly powerful lake corridor mega-region that stretches from Gary, Indiana through Chicago, Illinois to Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. I call upon State elected officials to fund this important corridor project.”
Jursik represents the South Shore communities of St. Francis, Cudahy, South Milwaukee and a portion of Oak Creek. She chaired the Lake Parkway Extension Study Advisory Committee, which reviewed options for a potential extension, received public input and issued a recommendation in support of the extension.
