Milwaukee Y, County Parks to offer $5 swim classes

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee and Milwaukee County Parks are collaborating on a set of $5 summer classes that will teach non-swimmers the basics of swimming and safety in the water.

The classes, which begin on Monday and are part of an initiative known as “Milwaukee Swims,” will walk attendees through essential swim skills and will help them learn how to recognize dangerous situations when venturing into water.

“Milwaukee Swims” aims to expand swim lessons to more locations across Milwaukee County. Through the Y’s partnership with Milwaukee County Parks, lessons will be offered at five sites: The David F. Schultz Aquatic Center in Lincoln Park, 1301 W. Hampton Avenue in Milwaukee; Jackson Park, 3500 W. Forest Home Avenue in Milwaukee; Pelican Cove Family Water Park in Kosciuszko Park, 2201 S. 7th Street in Milwaukee; Sheridan Park, 4800 S. Lake Drive in Cudahy; and Washington Park, 1859 N. 40th Street in Milwaukee.

Swim lessons will cater to children age six and older along with adults in need of swim lessons. Swim classes will serve specific age groups and will be taught by certified YMCA swim instructors.

Lessons will run through Saturday, Aug. 22, and will be held:

*Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 to 11:45 a.m. for children ages 6 to 8
*Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 to 11:45 a.m. for children age 13 and older
*Saturdays from 11 to 11:45 a.m. for participants age 21 and older

Sessions cost $5 per person and $10 per family. A significant portion of lesson costs will be covered by community donations, and the Milwaukee Y will not turn anyone away due to a lack of financial means.

Swim lessons are currently open for registration. For more information or to sign up, visit http://ymcamke.org/activities/aquatics.
