Milwaukee County executive race looms

Milwaukee County will be getting a new county executive now that Scott Walker is moving on to the governor’s office.
The special election to fill out Walker’s – likely in the spring – comes amid discussion among Milwaukee leaders that county government should be revamped or perhaps eliminated.
Walker said he plans to resign his county exec post by the end of the year and will be mindful that he needs to hand in his resignation by Dec. 28 in order for a special election to be held during the normal spring election.
His looming resignation has set off a flurry of activity among potential replacements. A Web site http://www.renewmilwaukee.org has already popped up as part of a movement to encourage state Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) to run for the post. GOP state Rep. Jeff Stone of Greendale has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, along with Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke. Others mentioned as possible candidates include Sue Black, the county parks director; and County Board Chair Lee Holloway, who says he’s considering a bid. A number of other potential candidates will likely give the race a look in the coming weeks.
Walker’s current term expires in 2012.
