Dr. Michael Malone always enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his grandmother. When he was in college, he would cut her grass on his way home from work. She would cook him dinner, and they’d share stories and sit on her porch for hours.
“After I became a physician I took a hard look at the older population of patients and realized that I enjoyed being with them,” Malone said. “I got additional training in geriatrics and then received a fellowship at Mt. Sinai where I am still sitting 30 years later.”
Malone enjoys tackling the challenging aspects of serving our elderly population.
Geriatric care has changed significantly, as the aging population continues to grow and the amount of geriatricians to serve that population does not, Malone said.
Malone has helped develop models of care that train additional nurses, hospital employees, doctors and pharmacists how to address the unique needs of older adults. Malone and his team have developed a real time tracking software that functions with the electronic medical record system to identify vulnerable and the most in need elderly patients. He has also developed several smart phone applications that help improve care for the aging population.
“What we realized is that something common to all seniors attending Mt. Sinai for care was that they all had electronic medical records; and they were putting information in the records, but nobody was using that information in real time. If they could they’d be able to harvest that information, look for patterns and trends and guide the care that was actually occurring.”
The system has been implemented in Aurora hospitals and is starting to be introduced in several health systems. Their ultimate goal is to scale the model to help improve the care of seniors across the state of Wisconsin.
