Journalism project chronicles ‘A Day in the Life’ in Milwaukee

BizTimes Media today unveiled “24 Hours: A Day in the Life in the City of Milwaukee in 2013,” a community journalism project compiled by students in the “Advanced Reporting” class at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The project is intended to serve as a digital time capsule to document how people lived, worked and played in the City of Milwaukee in 2013.

To compile the report, the students fanned out across the city and documented various scenes they observed around the clock in the city. Several of the community’s landmark institutions, venues, businesses and leaders are accounted for in the vignettes in the project.

The students chronicled life in the city over a 24-hour cycle, capturing moments at iconic Milwaukee destinations, including restaurants, taverns, factories, General Mitchell International Airport, the Riverwalk, the Pfister Hotel, the Milwaukee Public Market, St. Francis Hospital and Landmark Lanes. They interviewed many of Milwaukee’s civic leaders, including Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee Wave owner Sue Black, Badger Meter Inc. chief executive officer Rich Meeusen and other prominent corporate executives, as well as Ricardo Diaz of the United Community Center and Channel 12-WISN news anchor Kathy Mykleby.

The UWM students who compiled the vignettes and photography for the report were James Ashcroft, Sarah Duchow, Joe Horning, Amber Marin, Amber Ridgeway and Benjamin Slane. The students were supervised in the project by their journalism instructor, Steve Jagler, executive editor of BizTimes Milwaukee. The project was digitally designed and mastered by BizTimes creative coordinator Matt Cisz.

“A special thank you goes out to the businesses and other venues and executives who agreed to share their moments with our students for this project. My hope is that in 20 or 30 years, people will be able to open this time capsule and have an authentic accounting of the day-to-day routine of life in Milwaukee in 2013,” Jagler said.

It is a wonderful process that helps train the next generation of journalists,” said Tom Luljak, vice chancellor at UWM.
