Froedtert named to 100 Top Hospitals list

For the third consecutive year, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital has been named to the annual 100 Top Hospitals list released by Truven Health Analytics. Froedtert is one of 15 nationwide hospitals—and the only Wisconsin hospital—in the Major Teaching Hospitals category and one of five state hospitals to make the overall list.

“Being named to this list for three consecutive years is especially meaningful for us as an academic medical center that treats many seriously ill patients who require complex care,” said Cathy Buck, president of Froedtert Hospital. “The recognition underscores our sustained focus on providing high-quality, cost-effective, appropriate care to every patient, every time.”

The 100 Top Hospitals study, which has been conducted annually since 1993, identifies 100 hospitals that have been objectively proven to provide high value to their communities. Truven Health researchers evaluated 3,000 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals using public information like Medicare cost reports and Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data.

“Froedtert Hospital’s selection as one of Truven’s 100 Top Hospitals is a recognition of the high value that the Froedtert & MCW partnership offers to the citizens of our state,” said Dr. John Raymond Sr., MCW’s president and chief executive officer.

Mike Boswood, president and CEO of Truven Health Analytics, said, “All the key measures of hospital performance—patient mortality rates, complications, length of stay, readmissions and financial performance—are improving measurably among these industry leaders, despite the challenges of healthcare reform and an aging population.”

The Truven Health Analytics study identifies hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of value to their communities based on a national balanced scorecard. The scorecard measures performance in 11 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; readmission rates for heart attacks, heart failure, pneumonia; and Medicare spending.

Based on the results of this year’s study, Truven Health reports that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the 100 Top Hospitals facilities:

  • More than 126,500 additional lives could be saved
  • Nearly 109,000 additional patients could be complication-free
  • $1.8 billion in patient costs could be saved
  • The average patient could be released from the hospital half a day sooner
