A virtual network of Milwaukee bloggers and food enthusiasts known as #MKEFoodies, will sponsor a bake sale and silent auction to raise money for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer on Saturday, May 21 at Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery, 901 W. Juneau Ave., from 1 to 4 p.m.
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is a national nonprofit organization committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers.
According to Lori Fredrich, Milwaukee food blogger and assistant director of external relations, communications and recruitment at Marquette University College of Education the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer organization was started by Gretchen and Larry Witt to help find a cure for pediatric cancer when their son Liam was diagnosed with stage four cancer at the age of two. Liam lost his battle with cancer in January, 2011 he was almost seven-years-old.
To honor Liam Witt’s memory, Cookies for Kids’ with Cancer has put out the call for 700 bake sales to be held around the country during the month of May, the month of Liam’s birthday, Fredrich said.
“We had done a blog post about the cause and finally decided we could do more by hosting our own bake sale at Best Place,” she said.
The bake sale will feature items made by local food bloggers, bakers, and celebrity chefs, with silent auction baskets featuring items donated by local area businesses.
Glad Products Company has also announced they will match 100 percent of the proceeds made up to $225,000, Fredrich said.
“We have more than 35 bakers participating in the bake sale so far,” Fredrich said, “and really great silent auction items including an overnight stay at the Hilton and other really fabulous items. It’s really just a matter of getting people to come out and support the cause. It’s a great cause and a great opportunity for us all to fight back against childhood cancer.”
