Douglas Dynamics expands, renovates Milwaukee headquarters

Snow and ice control equipment manufacturer Douglas Dynamics Inc. is undergoing a multi-million dollar expansion and renovation of its Milwaukee facility. The exact monetary investment was not disclosed.

The project, which is expected to be completed before winter, consists of the addition of 2,000 square feet to its corporate offices; the creation of more conference room space; improvements to bathrooms and breakrooms; the installation of a new parking lot; and other outdoor upgrades to improve product storage and shipping efficiencies.

“It’s long overdue. It’s a great company that has been in that spot for about 40 years, and I don’t think has had a major renovation in at least 25 years,” said a company spokesman. “It’s more about use of space than anything else and to accommodate new employees.”

Douglas Dynamics has 1,100 full-time employees across North America, with just over 300 permanent employees in Milwaukee. Over the past couple years, 60 Milwaukee employees have been hired.

“The company is very focused on creating a great workplace for its folks,” the spokesman said.
The expansion and renovations are currently about 75 percent done. Design 2 Construct Development Corp. of Jackson, Wis., is doing the project.

“Our company was founded in Milwaukee and has grown here for more than 65 years. We are eager to reinvest in the area in order to achieve our long-term growth potential,” said James Janik, chairman, chief executive officer and president. “Milwaukee has a proud manufacturing heritage and a fantastic, qualified workforce, which has been instrumental in our growth to become the market leader in snow and ice control equipment.”

The company had 38 percent revenue growth from 2012 to 2013 and 56 percent revenue growth from 2013 to 2014.

The growth is attributed to strategic acquisitions and the implementation of its proprietary Douglas Dynamics Management System.
