Ken Cook Co., Milwaukee, received an Award of Merit in the 2006-2007 Technical Publication Competition from The Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). STC awarded Ken Cook Co. for its work in producing the International Multi-Language Small Craft Boat Owner Manual. The generic boat owner’s manual meets the International Organization for Standards (ISO) 10240:2004 requirement that specifies the required information for owner manuals of small craft with a hull length up to 24 meters. The manual is produced as a low-cost solution for boat manufacturers to provide their customers with basic information to operate a boat correctly. The manual is translated into Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Polish, Croatian, Hungarian, Slovak and Slovenian.
Engberg Anderson Design Partnership Inc.
Engberg Anderson Design Partnership Inc., Milwaukee and Madison, received an award for the Historic Third Ward Riverwalk from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The Historic Third Ward Riverwalk was one of seven projects chosen by the AIA for the 2007 AIA Institute Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design. Engberg Anderson Design Partnership was the only company in Wisconsin to receive this award.
Wisconsin Council on Children and Families
The Wisconsin Council on Children and Families (WCCF), Madison, awarded Jeffrey Pugh of Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Milwaukee, with the 125th Anniversary Youth Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship competition was open to all Wisconsin children 16 to 18 years old in good standing with their school and required an essay detailing the individual’s work for community unity or healthy choices in the community or school. Pugh is a senior at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts. He works with Artistic Locks Inc., a youth theater group; serves as president of Brothers of Kwanzaa, Milwaukee; helps with training sessions on racism, social class and working to make the community better through Urban Underground, Milwaukee, and serves as a mentor to middle school students. He is also a peer educator for Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc., New York.
Karin Beal of Rogers Memorial Hospital, Oconomowoc, received the 2007 WCCF Giraffe Award for her work with families and the creation of the Challenge Camp for children with ADHD, emotional or behavioral disorders and their siblings. Beal worked with families and Rogers Memorial to create a summer camp on the hospital’s Oconomowoc lakefront campus to meet the needs of children who cannot go to other summer camps. Challenge Camp helps children ages 5 to 17 build self esteem, social skills and a sense of personal responsibility. Rogers Memorial recently added a Sibling Challenge Camp and a counselor program for older returning campers.

Park Nicollet Health Services, St. Louis Park, Minn., selected Zizzo Group Advertising & Public Relations, Milwaukee, to provide health care communications services. Park Nicollet Health Services is comprised of Methodist Hospital and 25 clinics. Zizzo Group will be working with the health care system to create a community-based consumer health education program.

The Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, received a five-year, $8.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to develop a rapid, miniaturized, automated diagnostic device to test for avian flu and for potential bioterrorism agents. The new integrated device the researchers are developing may allow cost effective, point-of-care diagnosis of these agents within one to two hours. The device would be used in an outpatient setting. Dr. Kelly Henrickson, professor of pediatrics and microbiology at the Medical College, served as principal investigator for the project. Henrickson is also a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Actaea Works Ltd., Shorewood, opened a new 3,500 square-foot boutique spa and salon in Bay View, located at 2173 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Milwaukee. The spa features massage rooms for individual and couples massages, two facial rooms, a waxing room, hand and foot treatment rooms with multiple spa pedicure chairs and manicure tables, private dressing rooms and first and second floor lounges.
2006 Governor’s Wisconsin Forward Award of Excellence
Gov. Jim Doyle announced the four winners of his 2006 Governor’s Wisconsin Forward Award of Excellence for organizational performance excellence. Winners of the Award of Excellence include: Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-All Saints, Racine; Runzheimer International, Waterford; Meriter Hospital, Madison, and Luther Midelfort, Mayo Health System, Eau Claire. To be considered for the award, organizations must be committed to management excellence, have developed innovative strategies to address health care and business challenges, engage in proactive efforts to build a high-skilled workforce and have demonstrated outstanding results. Applicants were evaluated in seven areas, including leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; human resource focus; process management and results. The Downtown Racine Corp., Racine, awarded individuals, businesses and organizations who have contributed to the vitality of downtown in the 2006 Annual Downtown Achievement Awards. Gallery Night received the Night Owl Award, put on with the help of Denise Roberts McKee and Thom Bowen of Working Dog Gallery, Racine. The Scharding Family received the CPR Award for a building located at 600 6th St. that they own. The Scharding Family renovated the building in 2006 that now houses Timothy York’s Bistro. The new restaurant will include an outdoor patio and may expand into an upper level dining area. The annual Party on the Pavement received the Downtown Showcase Award, developed by downtown merchants, residents and employees to promote the 2001 redevelopment of downtown Racine. The Journal Times, Racine, received the Corporate Citizenship Award. The Journal Times employs 175 individuals and recently added a 10,000-square-foot expansion to their existing building in downtown Racine. The newspaper has sponsored and supported downtown events including Music on the Monument, annual Public Art projects and Gallery Night. Barb Ehrhart received the Downtown Champion Award for her involvement in the Racine Festival of Trees, the Downtown Holiday Parade and her help with bringing the community Christmas tree to Monument Square.

High Velocity Communications Inc., Waukesha, published a new magazine reaching the Chinese construction market. Work for Wealth magazine is published quarterly in Mandarin Chinese on behalf of the Caterpillar Asia Pacific Operations, Beijing, China and the Chinese network of Cat Dealers. The 16-page, full-color publication covers Caterpillar products and services, as well as contractor success stories.
UW-Milwaukee
UW-Milwaukee received a $1 million gift from Rockwell Automation Inc., Milwaukee, to support and develop a strategic alliance designed to ensure the competitiveness of the advanced automation industry throughout the region. The partnership and the gift funds will focus on materials, sensors and devices, and software and informatics. The objectives of the partnership include conducting research, developing a skilled local workforce, creating a research infrastructure and fostering interdisciplinary teams that will integrate technology, business and the sciences. Funding will also help UW-Milwaukee’s Research Foundation create a catalyst grant program in the field of automation.
