Velia Alvarez has been named public information assistant for the Milwaukee County Board. Alvarez is a former radio news anchor and reporter, most recently on a fill-in basis at Newsradio 620 WTMJ-AM.
“This appointment is an important step in my efforts to foster communications with constituents and to enhance transparency further for the County Board,” said Milwaukee County Board Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic.
As a marketing communications and public relations professional, Alvarez has served several government agencies and appointed offices, including the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, former Wisconsin Tourism Secretaries Jim Holperin and Kelli A. Trumble, Milwaukee County Parks and the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works, as well as dozens of local, regional and national businesses and organizations within the private sector.
Prior to joining the staff of the Milwaukee County Board, Alvarez headed up her own marketing communications business and managed several PR accounts at B+L Marketing Communications in Milwaukee. A graduate of UW-Madison, Alvarez also spent several years working in public relations in Los Angeles, most notably in public affairs for Kaiser Permanente.
