The organization’s board of directors voted in favor of appointing Dr. Julie Schuller, the organization’s current executive vice president, to the position effective April 1, 2017.

The organization’s current president and CEO, John Bartkowski, has announced he will retire on March 31, 2017, after leading the organization for 27 years.

Sixteenth Street provides clinical care and behavioral health services to what it describes as vulnerable populations in Milwaukee.

“We are extremely grateful for John’s superb leadership and vision,” said Board Chair Rick Walters in a statement. “This is a natural fit for Julie, and I’m confident she will carry on John’s legacy to the fullest.”

Under Bartkowski’s leadership, Sixteenth Street expanded from its original storefront clinic to two additional sites, including one in Waukesha. The organization is currently planning another expansion into two more sites. Details on the locations have not yet been released.

“John achieved a legacy of tremendous growth and success for Sixteenth Street—from community partnerships to increasing our physicians by ten-fold to leadership in environmental health and lead poisoning prevention,” Schuller said. “I’m humbled to fill his shoes.”

Bartkowski plans to do some consulting and teaching in his retirement and spend time with family and friends.

“I’m leaving Sixteenth Street in skilled hands,” Bartkowski said. “Julie is sure to do great things with the incredible momentum Sixteenth Street has going into the future.”
