For the seventh consecutive month, passenger growth at General Mitchell International Airport has increased with passenger totals up 4 percent in March.
According to statistics released by the airport, 651,546 passengers used the airport in March, an increase of 4.1 percent from March 2015.
Southwest Airlines, which has the largest market share in Milwaukee, contributed heavily to that growth. There were 12,000 spring break flights booked through Southwest in March.
Airport Director Izzy Bonilla said as more Wisconsin and Illinois travelers choose Milwaukee for convenience and low fares, the airport will be able to attract new service from the airlines.
Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele agreed, saying he expects the momentum to continue into the summer.
“The number one thing Milwaukee travelers can do to help our airport get more non-stop service is to choose Milwaukee for their travel,” Abele said.
Mitchell offers non-stop flights to 37 cities, and 160 international destinations are available from Milwaukee with just one connection. Milwaukee is served by Southwest, Delta, American, United, Frontier, Alaska, Air Canada, and OneJet.
