Rock the Green is organizing a festival with live music and food trucks to celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 22 on the downtown Milwaukee Riverwalk at the end of East Mason Street.
Rock the Green is a Milwaukee nonprofit dedicated to raising local awareness about environmental issues.
The event will recognize government and business leaders in the Milwaukee area for implementing certain sustainability efforts in Milwaukee. Speakers will include Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett; Matt Howard, director of the Alliance for Water Stewardship at The Water Council; and Rock the Green founder Lindsay Gardner.
The event, which will take place on a bicycle-powered stage, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cycling teams The Velo Femmes, Black Girls Do Bike and The Bella Donnas will power the stage, and Milwaukee musician Evan Christian will put on a show.
“Rock the Green works to preserve our environment all year long, so there’s no better time to spark conversations about sustainability than Earth Day,” said Gardner. “Not only are we getting the city excited for our upcoming festival, but we’re sharing practical, everyday tips on how to be eco-friendly.”
Food trucks at the event will include YellowBellies and Hardwood Café. Several organizations, including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences, U.S. Green building Council, the Urban Ecology Center, and other nonprofits and government entities will hold educational exhibits on environmental efforts.
“It’s our responsibility to protect and conserve this city’s natural resources, which makes recognizing Earth Day important for everyone,” said Mayor Barrett in a statement released Thursday. “Working together, we can make Milwaukee a world-class eco-city.”
Event sponsors include Branigan Communications, Anthologie, Waste Management, 88Nine RadioMilwaukee, Yelp, Natural Awakenings Magazine and Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration Office.
