MSP Real Estate Inc. announced that construction work is underway on its City Center at Deer Creek apartment project in New Berlin.

City Center at Deer Creek will consist of three, 34-unit buildings consisting of one, two and three bedroom apartments ranging in size from 980-1,900 square feet. Most of the apartments will be operated as affordable rentals with 86 of the 102 units reserved for residents earning no more than 60 percent of the area median income. Fifteen units will be rented for market rate tenants with no income restrictions. One unit will be reserved for an onsite manager. Rents will range from $530-$1,400 and will initially include one underground parking space.

The project was controversial as numerous New Berlin residents objected to an affordable housing development in the City Center area, located at National Avenue and Coffee Road. The city was sued by MSP and the U.S. Justice Department, citing the Fair Housing Act, when officials blocked the project. City officials later allowed the project to move forward.

Site work for the project is nearly complete and footings and foundations for the first building are in place, MSP said. The project is expected to be complete by late summer of 2012.
