The Wisconsin Department of Transportation this morning awarded a contract to Zenith Tech of Waukesha to repair the sagging Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge in Green Bay.
Zenith Tech was one of the three Wisconsin companies vying for the work. It provided the lowest bid of $7.7 million. Bids ranged from $7.7 million to $8.8 million.
The work is expected to include new pilings at the bases of Pier 21 to 25 to guard against corrosive soil conditions in that area on the east side of the Fox River. The sagging deck portion of the bridge will be positioned back in place with fresh concrete, according to a report by the Green Bay Press Gazette.
The total cost of the repair is expected to be between $15 million and $20 million, substantially less than the initial estimate of $50 million, the newspaper reported. Most of the repair is expected to be covered by federal funding.
The bridge, which carries about 40,000 vehicles per day, has been closed since one of its supports sank about two feet on Sept. 25. Repair work on the bridge could start next week and is expected to be finished by Jan. 17.
