The United Community Center was founded in 1970 as a small teen center. Today, the organization has grown into a full-service organization dedicated primarily to improving the lives of Milwaukee’s south side residents through education and programming.
Ricardo Diaz currently serves as executive director of the UCC.
While programs are adapted and changed regularly to reflect the needs of the community, the UCC currently offers a variety of programming for all age groups, including an After School Enrichment Program, the 40 Book Challenge to emphasize the importance of reading, Los Cuidadores Latinos Unidos to support caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and Neighborhood Development to guide first-time home buyers purchasing a home.
The center also operates the high-performing University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee charter school Bruce-Guadalupe Community School.
According to Patricia Cadorin, vice president and chief of staff at BMO Harris Bank, the success of BGCS can be attributed to linking an urban school with a community center to provide total family education and skill building.
