American United Taxicab has launched a new mobile app, called TAXIMKE, to help customers order, track and pay for its taxis.
The free app is available to download on Google Play and the Apple App Store. It can be used to order a cab, track the cab’s progress toward you and pay using a credit card.
TAXIMKE is similar to apps used by ridesharing services Uber and Lyft, which recently entered the Milwaukee market. At the Milwaukee Common Council meeting Tuesday, the council decided to delay its decision on eliminating the cap on taxi permits and requiring the services to obtain a permit to operate. Some taxi drivers have opposed the ridesharing services.
Customers will still have the option to pay with cash in American United cabs, the company said in its app announcement. Uber and Lyft don’t offer that option.
TAXIMKE will launch its app at its exclusive taxi stand outside Summerfest’s Mid Gate. It will be giving away free can coolers and an entry into a $1,000 cash drawing for those who download and register the app.
“TAXIMKE lets Milwaukee residents and visitors enjoy the convenience and ease of ordering using new technology without sacrificing safety and security or overpaying for their ride,” said Jason Matias, director of operations for TAXIMKE.
