About a year ago, Mortara Instrument, located on North 86th Street in Milwaukee, introduced their ELI 10 Electrocardiograph to the global health care and pharmaceutical markets.
“It’s the world’s first truly complete handheld ECG machine, which allows it to be used virtually anywhere,” says Brian Brenegan, vice president of finance for Mortara.
The ultra-portable unit was targeted initially to physician offices, select care areas of hospitals, clinical research settings, ambulances and other telemedicine applications.
“But the ELI 10 is reaching other sales channels as well,” Brenegan says. “We’re pleased with its acceptance. Over the last 12 months or so, we’ve seen sales of more than a half million dollars.”
The ELI 10 features a waveform display for easy viewing, a full keyboard with familiar ELI cardiograph user interface and a wide variety of connectivity options.
“Key people at Mortara who were involved in the ELI 10’s development were Justin Mortara, Maurizio Fumagalli, and Gianluca Generali,” Brenegan says. “Our market research told us that customers were looking for ECGs with extreme portability and we listened to their requests. Mortara has always been a responsive and innovative engineering company, so we gave this product unique characteristics to set it apart from competing companies. We also wanted it to go into other niche markets as well.”
Brenegan says companies experiencing a down economy usually tighten their belts by eliminating research and development and marketing. Not so with Mortara, however. “We find that R&D is very important and are devoting time and money to this activity in order to come up with new innovations,” he says.
